The Department of ENT Head & Neck Surgery, TU Teaching Hospital invites you to 2nd Paediatric ENT Basic Course to be held on 20th September 2014 at Ganesh Man Singh Bhawan, TU Teaching Hospital. As in the 1st course, this course is aimed at providing a general overview of common Paediatric ENT conditions that we encounter in our day to day practice.

Targeting the young Otolaryngologists, Paediatricians and General Practiceners, the course will be a great platform for an interactive and stimulating discussion under the guidance of highly professional teachers/clinicians.

Academic Activities

Regular courses

MBBS

MBBS students attend PG Teaching Learning Activities in the morning. They Attend ward  round  and teaching by the Faculties, in the OPD they stay with senior faculties, have an exposure in the Speech and Hearing.

We have 13 MS residents working in the department.

MS teaching learning activities

n Seminar – twice a week n Journal club – once a week n Audit- once a month

n Thesis presentation – twice a year n Case presentation – once a week

n Monthly departmental statistics on ward admission, OPD patients, surgery performed, emergency cases, other activities of the department including hearing and speech services. n Present cases in afternoon special clinics- voice clinic, paediatric clinics, rhinology clinics, ear and vertigo clinics, tumour clinics

n They rotate every 3 months in subspeciality unit and are assessed at the end of posting by the subspeciality faculties according to the Individual Training Plan

n They appear in written assessment every 4 months and practical every yearly

MDGP training for 2 weeks

MD paediatric training once a week for 3 months

BASLP ( Bachelor in Audiology Speech Language Pathology) – it is a first course of its kind in Nepal. This  4 year course  was started 3 years ago and there are 16 students undergoing training. Two of them are in final phase and doing internship.

Training of Primary Health workers – National Centre for Ear and Hearing Care has been conducting Primary Ear Care Training for the prevention of deafness and ear diseases for many years. In 2069  also Primary Health Workers were trained.

Special courses / Training

Ear Surgery and Otology Training Program in Bangladesh/Cambodia

In order to train the doctors of Bangladesh, on invitation of Impact Foundation Bangladesh, Faculties from the department have been visiting to Bangladesh to provide their expertise. Last year 29 Sept -  8 Oct 2012, Dr Urmila Gurung and Dr Bigen Man Shakya (anaessthesiologist) and Mrs Narayani Gautam Sharma (Sister) participated from T U Teaching Hospital. Similarly last year prof. Bibhu Pradhan and Dr. Kunjan Acharya rendered their services in Preah Dong Hospital, Cambodia.

 

Cochlear implantation

The first cochlear implantation in Nepal was performed on 26th December 2004 at TU Teaching Hospital. This service has been continuing since then.

FESS

The functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) course including Hands on Cadaveric dissection with demonstration of Live and cadaveric dissection of International standard has been a regular event in the department. Last year 4th such course was held 6-9 January 2012. Dr H Stamberger from Austria and Dr Richard Douglas from New Zealand offered their expertise to teach and train participants from Nepal and abroad. Prof Bibhu Pradhan is the course director and Dr Narmaya Thapa the course Co-ordinator and Dr Kunjan Acharya is the Course Secretary.  Rest of the faculty are involved as internal course faculties.

Cadaveric Head and Neck dissection Course

The department also conducted 2nd and 3rd Head and Neck Surgery cadaveric dissection course in 15th – 18th January and 23rd – 26th December 2012 . The course is first of its kind in this region Prof. Bimal Sinha is the Director, Prof. D K Baskota is Co-ordinator and Dr. Pabina Rayamajhi is the Secretary of course.

Temporal bone dissection and Ear surgery course

Ganesh Man Singh Memorial Academy of ENT Head and Neck Studies has been conducting Temporal bone dissection and ear surgery course regularly twice a year to train ENT doctors from Nepal and abroad. We are thankful to Impact Nepal to provide instruments/ equipment and assistants and Forensic Medicine of IOM for providing cadavers. The course consists of hands on temporal bone dissection, video sessions,demonstration on temporal bone dissection and live surgery demonstrations. All faculties in the department participate in such courses. Prof RP Shrivastava is the Co-ordinator, Prof Hari Bhattarai  the Director and Dr Rabindra Pradhanang is the Secretary of the course. Last year the courses were held in August 20-24, Dr. David Foyt from USA visited as external faculty and performed cochlear implantation and BAHA. He donated 5 BAHA free of cost. Altogether 14 doctors participated in the course. Likewise in April 1-4, 2013 similar course was organised. In this course also there were 14 participants.

Training

Mr SL Karna Senior Audiologist and Speech Pathologist went for training in ABR,OAE and ASSR” 6  – 10  August, 2012,  Samvaad Institute of Speech & Hearing,  Bangalore , India.

Dr Narmaya Thapa Assoc Professor underwent  training on Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and Facioplastic Surgery, St. Vincent’s Private hospital and Bondi Junction hospital, Sydney, Australia (4-30  August,  2012).

Dr Kunjan Acharya  was trained for 1 month as Clinical observer for Endoscopic Sinus Surgery with Prof Dharambir Singh Sethi at Singapore General Hospital (June 27-Jully24 2012)

Course/ Conference / seminar attended

6 th National conference of  Society of Otolaryngologists  (SOL) of Nepal, (Feb.22nd-23rd ,  2013) was held in Bharatpur Chitwan. Most of our faculties and residents actively participated in the event.


Senior  faculties chaired the Scientific Sessions. Various papers on ENT and Head and Neck Surgery were presented. Majority of free papers were from our department.


Prof Hari Bhattarai attended 10th National Conference of the Cochlear Implant group of India held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India on 22 – 24 Nov 2012. He also attended 15th National Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of Society of Otolaryngologists and Head and Neck Surgeons of Bangladesh 11  and 12 April  2013.

Prof Dharma Kanta Baskota participated as a faculty in joint conference of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (12-14 April, 2012), Lahore, Pakistan.

Prof Bibhu Pradhan attended FESS workshop at Chennai India in Sept. 2012 and FESS and Skull Base workshop at Jaipur India in May 2013.

Mr SL Karna attended “Pre-Conference Workshop” in 10th CIGICON on 22nd November,2012 in Ahmedabad, India, attended “10th National Conference of Cochlear Implant Group of India”  23rd to 24th  November,2012, Ahmedabad, India, attended Hands on “Training in ABR,OAE and ASSR”  6 – 10  August, 2012, Samvaad Institute of Speech & Hearing at  Bangalore , India ; also participated  in a 4 day Workshop on “ Introductory Nucleus Training For CI Audiologists”  3 -6  September, 2012 , New Delhi , India.

Mr Karna also was a Co-chairperson of Scientific Session on “Articulation/Phonology “ in the 45th

National Conference of Indian Speech & Hearing Association , Chennai, India, 1 – 3 February, 2013 . He was also  a Panelist on  “Current state & future growth of Speech –Language Pathology and Audiology as Profession : International Perspective” in the above event.

Kabi Raj Khanal attended advance Habilitation Training on sound foundation for babies 27-31t August ,2012 in Mumbai, Basic Auditory Habilitation and application of Training for Habilitationist 17  – 21 December , 2012 Delhi, Basic Concept in CI Rehabilitation Theory and Practice 18 –  21 March, 2013 Kathmandu,6th National Conference of Society Otolaryngologists of Nepal  22- 23 February, 2013, Chitwan, Nepal; Pre – conference workshop held during 10th CIGICON 2nd Nov,2012 in Ahmedabad, India; 10th national conference of Cochlear Implant Group of India held during on 23-24 Nov, 2012, Ahmedabad, India

Dr Narmaya Thapa attended hands on course on Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery St. Vincent’s Private hospital, Sydney, Australia (1st-3rd August, 2012),  Hands on course on facioplastic surgery, advanced Learning Center, MS.  Ramiaih Medical College, Bangalore. (28th Feb.-2nd March, 2013).

Dr Pabina Rayamajhi attended  3 days Endoscopic Sinus surgery workshop in KKR hospital in Chennai, India in August 2012 and also Otology ear surgical camps in Cambodia in May 2012.

Dr Rabindra Pradhanang visited International Education College, Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine,China, for sharing the knowledge of ENT with International students of the College, from October 2012 – December 2012. He also participated in 4th National Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Workshop held from 6th to 9th January 2013 in TUTH, Kathmandu
