Background:
Speech and hearing unit in TUTH was established in April 1987 AD under ENT head and Neck Surgery Department.
Dr. L.N. Prasad (First ENT surgeon of Nepal), Dr. Rakesh Prasad and Dr. R.C.M Amatya are pioneer contributors in the establishment of Speech and Hearing unit. After the realization of need of Speech & hearing profession in Nepal, Dr. L.N. Prasad, encouraged to establish this unit under leadership of Ms. Claudia Walter (Speech language Pathogist, Registered Nurse,Come Care International, USA).
In 1988 AD, with the help of Mr. Dieter Walter (Electronic Engineer), Mr. Garyward (Emtech lab, USA) & Mr. Bob Wagner USA helped to establish and run first hearing & ear mould lab.
Mr. Dhan Man Gurung, Ms. Tara winterton (British VWSO volunteer), Ms. Vanessa Osborne (British VSO volunteer), Mr. Kabi Raj Khanal (Speech Language Pathologist & Audiologist), Ms. Sareena Joshi (Speech Language Pathologist & Audiologist), also played a major role in the established & development of speech and hearing profession in Nepal.
Mr. S.L. Karna (Chief Audiologist and Speech Language Pathologist), who graduated from India was handed over the responsibility of this unit, as a first Audiologist of Nepal.
In this unit we have six Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists, two Audiometricians and two ear mould technician working with the objects of evaluation, diagnosis and rehabilitation/Therapy for all kinds of speech and language disorders.
Presently Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology course is running, which was started on 2066 BS.

- This unit is also evolved in teaching learning activities for MBBS students &Post Graduate ENT residents.
